Teeth Tips

Teeth Tip #1

Permanent molars come in around age 6.  Thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth can prevent decay in the pits and fissures.  Sealants can significantly reduce caries.   Yet only one in three U.S kids receives dental sealants.  Talk to your dental professional.

Teeth Tip #2

Wear and tear from teeth grinding is often referred to as bruxism.  Teeth grinding may be caused by stress or anxiety. Over time it can wear down the biting surfaces of teeth, making them more susceptible to decay.  It can also cause damage to expensive dental work.  Grinding taxes the muscles and joints of the jaw causing jaw pain and headaches.  If your teeth show signs of bruxism, your dentist may recommend a mouth guard worn at night to prevent grinding.

Teeth Tip #3

Dental x-rays are used for diagnosing problems than can't be seen with the naked eye.  X-rays reveal cavities between the teeth, impacted teeth, abscess, gum disease, and bone loss.

With x-rays, dentists can detect problems early enough to prevent serious damage that might involve a great deal of time and expense.

Dental x-rays emit very low doses of radiation.  Generally the beneficts outweigh the risks.
